As some of you may already know, I’m an English teacher in a bilingual school in Madrid and I’ve been fortunate to teach some great children. At the end of the 2009-2010 school year, I asked a few of my students, if they’d be willing to talk to me in Spanish about their hobbies and interests. So, during these summer months I’m going to podcast these interviews. In a couple of instances, the kids will do a story reading in Spanish.

Some of you who live outside of Spain may wonder how come there aren’t any photos of my students on the blog during this series. In Spain, parents are more sensitive and anxious about posting photos of minors online and schools have strict rules against it. While it would’ve been nice for Cody’s Cuentos listeners to have a face to go with the voices of my students, it really isn’t necessary. So that’s why you won’t see any photos of the kids who participated in this project on blog.

In any case, I hope you enjoy these interviews. Also, if you enjoy listening to the audio cuentos, I will continue to post a few new stories throughout these summer months as well.

Charlando con Cody’s Cuentos – Episodio 1 (Charlando con Ruth)

Eleena: ¡Hola! ¿Qué tal?

Ruth: Hola

E: ¿Cómo te llamas?

R: Ruth

E: ¿Y cuántos años tienes?

R:  Tengo doce.

E:  Ruth, cuentame sobre tu famila. Tu madre es de Ecuador, ¿verdad?

R: Sí, sí, es de Ecuador. Nací en Quito, el capital y mi abuela también es de Ecuador y bueno Ecuador es un país muy, muy bonito. Es tropical. Tiene un montón de animales y se puede disfrutar de una comida muy variada.

E: Y ¿tú tienes un plato favorito?

R: Sí, me encanta lo que se llama la fritada, que es carne de cerdo, frita con mucha sazón y con muchas ingredientes naturales.

E: Hmm, muy rico. Bueno, Ruth, cuentanos, ¿qué es lo que más te gusta hacer?

R: Bueno, lo que más me gusta hacer es jugar con mis amigos, salir fuera por las calles caminar por un rato, y pasarlo bien con mi hermana sobretodo porque somos muy buenas amigas.

E: ¿Qué no te gusta de ninguna manera?

R: Bueno, lo que menos me gusta hacer es estudiar matemáticas porque las odio.

E: ¿Y el inglés? ¿Qué tal?

R: Me encanta. Es muy facíl de aprender y la verdad es que las clases son muy faciles de memoraziar y los examenes saco buenas notas.

E: Y ¿a qué le tienes miedo?

R: Tengo un pánico tremendo a las areñas porque son bichos negros grandes. Oy, son horribles, no me gustan para nada.

E: Si pudieras ser un animal, ¿cuál serías y por qué?

R: Si pudiera ser un animal, sería un león o un tigre. Me gustaría ser más un tigre porque tienen un color precioso, son muy bonitos y también porque están simple en la naturaleza y como me encanta la naturaleza, me gustaría ser este animal.

E: Si tuvieras suficiente dinero, ¿qué te comprarías?

R:  Pues, me compraría una mansión gigante en Los Ángeles.

E: ¿En serio? (risas)

R: Sí, porque me encantaría me en-can-taría visitar Estados Unidos y bueno visitar Los Ángeles, California y todas estas partes donde salen  las películas.

E. Entonces, ¿qué te gustaría hacer de mayor? ¿(Te gustaría hacerte) actriz?

R: No, la verdad es que me gustaría ser profesora de inglés o algo que está relacionado con el inglés porque me encanta.

E: Hmm, me alegro.

R: Y, si tuvieras una caja fuerte, ¿qué guardarías en ella?

E: Bueno, la verdad es que guardaría dinero que tuviera y pero si la tuviera sobre todo fotos y recuerdos de este curso ya que es el último que voy a vivir con mis compañeros.

E: ¿Cuántos años te gustaría tener ahora mismo y por qué?

R:  Me gustaría tener ahora mismo cinco o seis años…y ¿por qué? (risas)

E: Y ¿por qué?  (risas)

R: Bueno es una pregunta algo rara porque es que quisera vivir cosas buenas que me han pasado porque la verdad es que no quiero que se acabe el curso.

E: ¿Qué, qué te gustaría cambiar del mundo?

R: Bueno, las guerras sobre todo porque es algo que está matando a mucha gente y también el hambre pero me encantaría cambiar también en parte el tiempo porque  en invierno no puedes hacer nada interesante además de quedarte en casa. Entonces me gustaría cambiar estas cosas.

E: ¿Qué te hace feliz?

R: Bueno, lo que me hace feliz es estar con mi familia, disfrutar de todo el tiempo posible..eh…estar con mis amigos y las personas que más quiero.

E: Muchísimas gracias por hablar conmigo. Ha sido un placer. Y mucho suerte con el instituto.

R: Thanks! Bueno, ¡gracias!

E:  ¡Hasta luego!

R: ¡Hasta luego!

The children are quite precocious and have done their homework. They talk about the earthquakes in Chile and Haiti, bullfighting in Spain and even about the capture of some terrorists. But some of the kids don’t always have their facts straight, which makes for some interesting and very amusing listening.

There isn’t a transcript available for this but here are some key vocabulary words and explanations of some of the items you will hear the children talking about. In the 10-minute clip you will hear them discuss the following topics: the earthquakes in Chile and Haiti, flooding in Spain, the huge waves that hit a cruise ship in the Mediterranean (the kids call it a tsunami, although it wasn’t technically a tsunami), a  ship trapped in the ice in the Baltic Sea, animal cruelty, SpongeBob SquarePants and the animated movie “UP.”

*maldita sea – damn it! (Spain has a more relaxed attitude about swearing and cursing, so it’s not considered as vulgar or crude as in English.)

¡Ostras, qué guay! - Gosh, how cool!

País Vasco – the Basque Country

In Spanish, some native speakers call the U.S.A. “USA” pronouncing it as a word instead of as separate letters. So when you hear the kids talk about “usa” they are talking about the United States.

ETA are the initials of a Basque separatist group which has killed and injured hundreds of people in Spain and France.  Last week Spanish and French officials captured three of ETA’s top leaders. One of them had recently returned from training with a communist terrorist group called FARC in Venezuela.

One of the children confuses this recent news with something else she must have heard her parents talking about. Who knows. In any case, she incorrectly says that the ayuntamiento (town council)  of a Basque village is selling weapons to the United States and providing escondites (hiding places, hideouts) to Americans. That isn’t true, of course. The child confuses recent news about ETA with the U.S., at one point even referring to the United States as UTA.

Érase una vez un pobre leñador que estaba harto de la vida tan penosa que llevaba y solía decir que tenía ganas de ir a reposar a los bordes del Aqueronte; porque veía que, en su profundo dolor, jamás el Cielo cruel no había querido concederle ni uno de sus deseos.

Un día que se quejaba en el bosque, Júpiter, con el rayo en la mano, se le apareció; difícilmente podría pintar el miedo que sobrecogió al buen hombre.

-No quiero nada -exclamó, arrojándose al suelo-; no deseo nada, ni truenos ni nada. Vamos a hablar, Señor, de igual a igual.

-Deja de temblar -le dijo Júpiter-; vengo compadecido de tus quejas, para demostrarte que eres injusto en tus quejas. Escucha. Yo te prometo, yo que soy el dueño soberano del mundo entero, atender plenamente tus tres primeros deseos, los primeros que quieras formular sobre cualquier cosa. Mira bien lo que pueda satisfacerte, y como tu felicidad depende de tus votos, piénsalo bien antes de formular tus deseos.

En diciendo estas palabras, Júpiter ascendió a los Cielos, y el leñador, muy contento, echándose el haz de leña a la espalda, emprendió el camino de regreso. Nunca le pareció la carga menos pesada.

-No hay que obrar a la ligera -decía trotando-. El caso es importante; hay que pedir consejo a la parienta.

Cuando entró bajo el techo de la cabaña la carga de helechos, le dijo:

-Fanchon, hagamos un buen fuego y una buena comida; somos muy ricos. Y sólo necesitamos formular nuestros deseos.

Y allí, punto por punto, le cuenta todo lo sucedido. Al oír su relato, la esposa, viva y presurosa, concibe mil proyectos en su mente; pero considerando la importancia de conducirse con prudencia, le dice a su esposo:

-Blas, amigo mío, para no cometer una tontería debido a nuestra impaciencia, examinemos juntos lo que nos conviene hacer en una situación así. Dejemos para mañana nuestro primer deseo y consultemos con la almohada.

-Estoy de acuerdo -dice el buen Blas-. Anda, vete y trae vino añejo.

Cuando volvió con él, bebió y, saboreando cómodamente, cerca del fuego, aquel dulce reposo, dijo apoyándose en el respaldo de su silla:

-¡Con estas brasas tan buenas, qué bien vendría una vara de morcilla!

Apenas acabó de pronunciar estas palabras, que su mujer, muy asombrada, vio una larga morcilla que, saliendo de una esquina de la chimenea, se aproximaba a ella serpenteando. Al instante lanzó un grito; pero juzgando que esta aventura tenía por causa el deseo que, por pura torpeza, había formulado el imprudente de su marido, no hubo injuria, ni pulla, ni improperio que, hecha una furia, no dijera a su pobre marido.

-¡Cuando se podría obtener un Imperio, oro, perlas, rubíes, diamantes, vestidos! ¿Y no se te ocurre desear más que una morcilla?

-Bueno, me he equivocado -dijo-. Mi elección ha sido desacertada. He cometido una gran falta; lo haré mejor la próxima vez.

-Bueno, bueno -repuso ella-. Espérame sentado. ¡Se necesita ser un animal para formular ese deseo!

El esposo, más de una vez, llevado de la cólera, se sintió tentado de formular un deseo mudo. Y, dicho entre nosotros, habría sido lo mejor que hubiera podido hacer.

-Los hombres -se decía- hemos venido al mundo a padecer. ¡Maldita sea la morcilla, plegue a Dios, maldita pécora que se te quede colgada de la nariz!

Esta súplica, al instante, fue escuchada por el Cielo y, apenas el marido profirió sus palabras, la vara de morcilla se quedó pegada a su nariz. Este prodigio imprevisto irritó muchísimo a Fanchon. Fanchon era bonita, muy graciosa, y a decir verdad este adorno en su nariz no hacía buen efecto, salvo que al colgarla sobre la boca la impedía hablar tranquilamente, lo cual era una ventaja para su esposo, tan grande que en aquel feliz momento pensó no desear más.

-Ya podría, -pensaba para su adentros-, después de una desgracia tan terrible, con el deseo que me queda, convertirme de una vez en Rey. Desde luego, nada iguala la grandeza soberana, pero hay que pensar qué tristeza tendría la Reina cuando, al sentarse en su trono, se viera con la nariz más larga que una vara. Voy a ver qué dice y que decida ella si prefiere convertirse en una gran Princesa y conservar esa horrible nariz o quedarse de simple leñadora con la nariz corriente, como las demás personas, tal como la tenía antes de la desgracia.

Al fin, la cosa bien examinada, aun sabiendo que el poder que proporciona el cetro y la corona y que cuando se está coronada siempre se tiene la nariz bien hecha, como no existe nada que posea la fuerza de agradar, ella prefirió conservar su cofia antes que hacerse Reina y ser fea.

Así, pues, el leñador no cambió de estado, no se convirtió en un potentado, no llenó su bolsa de escudos, y fue feliz de emplear el deseo que le quedaba para volver a su mujer a su primitivo estado, débil felicidad, pobre recurso.

Qué cierto es que los hombres miserables, ciegos, imprudentes y variables no deben formular deseo alguno, y qué pocos hay entre ellos que sean capaces de hacer buen uso de los dones que Dios les ha concedido.

Hace muchísimos años vivía un rey que tenía once hijos y una hija llamada Elisa. Los hermanos se querían mucho y eran muy unidos. Aunque vivían en un hermoso castillo, jugaban y estudiaban como cualquier familia grande y feliz. Por desgracia, su madre había muerto poco después del nacimiento del último príncipe.

Con el pasar del tiempo, el rey se repuso de la muerte de su amada esposa. Un día, conoció a una mujer muy atractiva de quien se enamoró. Sin sospechar que en realidad se trataba de una bruja, le propuso matrimonio.

“Ella me hará compañía y mis hijos tendrán de nuevo una madre”, pensó el rey. Sin embargo, el mismo día en que llegó al castillo, la nueva reina resolvió deshacerse de los jóvenes príncipes.

La reina empezó a mentirle al rey para indisponerlo con sus hijos. Luego, un buen día, reunió a los príncipes a la entrada del castillo.

-¡Fuera de aquí! -gritó-. No los quiero volver a ver nunca más.

Diciendo esto, levantó su capa hacia el cielo y los convirtió a todos en cisnes salvajes. Pero, como eran príncipes, cada uno llevaba una corona de oro en la cabeza.

La malvada reina le dijo al monarca que los príncipes habían huido del castillo.

-Olvídate de esos ingratos -dijo. Luego, lo convenció de que Elisa necesitaba estar rodeada de otros chicos y mandó a la niña a vivir con una familia de campesinos.

Cuando Elisa cumplió quince años, el rey la mandó traer y la reina la recibió con una amabilidad fingida.

-Ven, preciosa -le dijo-. Debes prepararte para saludar a tu padre.

Mientras Elisa se preparaba para tomar el baño, la reina consiguió tres sapos, los besó y luego les ordenó:

-Tú te sentarás en la cabeza de Elisa y la volverás estúpida. Tú te pondrás cerca de su corazón y se lo endurecerás. Tú le saltarás a la cara y la volverás fea.

Luego puso los sapos en el agua, que tomó un color repugnante. Sin embargo, la dulzura y la inocencia de Elisa rompieron el hechizo. Los sapos se convirtieron en amapolas y el agua se volvió cristalina.

Al ver esto, la reina se llenó de ira. Le estregó barro en la cara a la muchacha y le enmarañó el cabello.

Cuando Elisa se presentó ante el rey, la indignación de éste fue enorme.

-¡Esta no es mi hija! -exclamó el rey.

-¡Padre, soy yo, Elisa! -replicó la muchacha.

-Es una pordiosera [una persona que pide limosna] que sólo quiere tu dinero -dijo la bruja.

-¡Llévensela! -ordenó el rey.

Con el corazón destrozado, Elisa se fue al bosque. Extrañaba a sus hermanos más que nunca y deseaba con toda su alma volver a verlos. Se sentó junto a un arroyo a lavarse la cara y a desenredarse el cabello.

En ese momento, una vieja mujer se le acercó.

-¿Ha visto a once príncipes vagando por el mundo? -preguntó Elisa, esperanzada.

-No, mi querida niña, pero he visto once cisnes con coronas de oro en la cabeza -respondió la anciana-. Vienen a la orilla de aquel lago a la hora del crepúsculo.

Elisa se fue a la orilla del lago a esperar. Cuando el sol se ocultó, escuchó un batir de alas. En efecto, eran los once cisnes salvajes con sus once coronas de oro en la cabeza.
Al principio, Elisa se asustó y se escondió detrás de una roca.

Uno a uno, los cisnes se fueron posando en la orilla. Al tocar el suelo, recobraban su aspecto humano. Encantada, Elisa vio desde su escondite que eran sus hermanos.

-¡Antonio, Sebastián! ¡Soy yo, Elisa! -gritó, mientras corría a abrazarlos.

Todos se reunieron en torno a ella, felices de estar de nuevo juntos, después de tanto tiempo.

¡Fue un instante glorioso! Los once príncipes le narraron a su hermana de qué manera la bruja perversa los había convertido en cisnes y Elisa, a su vez, les contó que a ella la había echado del castillo.

-De día somos cisnes y al atardecer volvemos a ser humanos -explicó Antonio, el mayor de los hermanos.

-Encontraré la manera de romper el hechizo -les aseguró Elisa.

Los hermanos encontraron un pedazo de lienzo lo suficientemente grande para llevar a Elisa en él. Al amanecer del día siguiente, la alzaron en vuelo con suavidad. Sebastián, el menor de todos, le daba bayas para comer. Cuando el sol empezó a ocultarse otra vez, llegaron a una cueva secreta, en un bosque apartado. Esa noche, Elisa soñó con un hada que volaba en una hoja.

-Podrás romper el hechizo si estás dispuesta a sufrir -susurró el hada-. Debes recoger ortigas y tejer once camisas con el lino que saques. Cuando las hayas terminado, deberás lanzárselas a tus hermanos para romper el hechizo. ¡Pero escucha bien! No puedes ni hablar ni reírte hasta no haber terminado.

-Eso no importa -respondió Elisa en sus sueños-. ¡Haré lo que sea necesario para salvar a mis hermanos!

Cuando Elisa se despertó esa mañana, sus hermanos ya se habían ido.

En el suelo, junto a ella, había una pila de hojas de ortiga. Elisa se puso a trabajar de inmediato. Al regresar los príncipes a la cueva, encontraron a su hermana tejiendo una prenda bastante curiosa. Elisa tenía las manos llenas de heridas.

-¿Qué haces? -preguntó Sebastián. Pero su hermana no podía decir nada.

Sebastián no pudo evitar que se le llenaran los ojos de lágrimas cuando se inclinó a mirar las manos de Elisa. Las lágrimas cayeron en sus dedos y las heridas desaparecieron inmediatamente. Ella le sonrió agradecida, pero no se atrevió a decir ni una sola palabra.

Los hermanos observaron durante un rato. El asunto era muy misterioso, pero ellos sospecharon que algo mágico debía estar ocurriendo. A lo mejor, Elisa estaba tratando de salvarlos.
Al otro día, cuando ya sus hermanos se habían ido, Elisa salió de la cueva.

“Haré mi trabajo a la sombra de aquel roble”, pensó. “Allá no me verán.”

Sin embargo, un grupo de cazadores la descubrió.

-¿Tú quien eres? -preguntó uno de ellos con voz áspera. Al no obtener respuesta, la levantó a la fuerza.

-Quietos -dijo una voz. Era un joven rey.

-¿Cómo te llamas? -preguntó amablemente el rey. Elisa se limitó a sacudir la cabeza y a sonreír.

-Ella vendrá conmigo -dijo el rey y ordenó a los cazadores retirarse.

De regreso en el castillo, el joven rey intentó hablarle a Elisa en diferentes idiomas, pero ella no hacía más que tejer. Aunque la muchacha no decía nada, su mirada dulce y su linda cara cautivaron el corazón del rey.

Elisa vivía ahora rodeada de lujos, pero pasaba la mayor parte del tiempo tejiendo en silencio. El rey se sentaba junto a ella y era feliz en su compañía. Un día, decidió hablar con el arzobispo.

-Amo a esta dulce doncella -anunció-, y deseo casarme con ella.

-Su majestad no sabe nada sobre esta muchacha -replicó el arzobispo-. Bien podría ser una bruja. Ese tejido es bastante extraño.

Sin embargo, el rey estaba decidido. Elisa escuchó en silencio la propuesta del rey y le apretó suavemente la mano. La boda tuvo lugar poco después.

Elisa siguió tejiendo hasta que un día se le acabaron las ortigas. Una noche, se fue al cementerio a recoger más hojas. Aunque allí había tres brujas reunidas, Elisa no hizo caso y pensó sólo en las camisas de sus hermanos.

El arzobispo, que la había seguido, se fue a alertar al rey:

-Le dije a su Majestad que su esposa tenía trato con las brujas -afirmó el arzobispo.

El rey queriendo comprobar tal acusación se fue al cementerio. Aterrado, vio a Elisa cerca de las brujas, en torno a una tumba.

-No lo puedo creer -dijo el rey, desconsolado-. Castígala, si eso es lo que debes hacer.

Elisa fue acusada de brujería.

-Esposa mía, te ruego que hables en tu defensa -suplicó el rey. Pero Elisa no podía más que mirarlo con ojos tristes.

Al otro día, la llevaron a la plaza para quemarla en la hoguera. Elisa seguía tejiendo y llevaba con ella las diez camisas para sus hermanos. La muchedumbre enfurecida gritaba:

-¡Quemen a la bruja!

De repente, en el cielo aparecieron once cisnes salvajes que descendieron hacia Elisa.

Al verlos, ella les lanzó de inmediato las camisas. La gente se quedó atónita al ver que los cisnes se convertían en príncipes.

Sebastián, quien recibió la undécima camisa con una manga sin terminar, tenía todavía un ala.

-¡Sálvenme! -gritó por fin Elisa-. ¡Soy inocente!

Rodeada de sus hermanos, Elisa se presentó ante el rey. Las lágrimas le rodaban por las mejillas a medida que iba relatando la historia de la madrastra, del encuentro con sus hermanos y el motivo de su silencio.

El rey también lloró de felicidad y abrazó a su esposa con ternura. -Sólo alguien con un corazón tan bueno como el tuyo haría ese sacrificio -dijo el rey.

La multitud gritaba alborozada:

-¡Dios bendiga a la reina!

Fue entonces cuando Elisa notó el ala de Sebastián.

-¡Tu brazo, mi pobre hermano! -dijo Elisa llorando.

-No llores -la consoló Sebastián-. Llevaré con orgullo esta ala de cisne como prueba de tu amor generoso e incondicional.

In a nutshell, Blancanieve and Rojaflor are two young sisters who live with their mother in the woods. One day a bear comes knocking on their cottage door and eventually the two sisters and the cuddly animal become good friends. But it wouldn’t be a Grimm fairy tale if there wasn’t some evil lurking in the background. The version you’ll hear in this podcast has been modernized and adapted for a 21st-century audience. It’s heavy on the girl power (in other words, there’s no prince charming who comes to the rescue) and the importance of being loyal to one’s friends, no matter who (or what) they are.

There’s a line in the story where it sounds like Megui, the reader of the story, says ciervo (deer) instead of cuervo (crow.). The full sentence in the story is: “El graznido inoportuno de algún cuervo añadía al paisaje un toque de inquietud.” (“The untimely caw of a random crow added a bit of unease to the scenery.”)

If you are a regular visitor of this blog, you’ve probably already noticed some big changes to the site.

The blog has a new design with a totally new transcript store. There were a lot of technical problems with the previous store setup and I’m confident that this redesign of the site will dramatically reduce, if not eliminate, the problems many of you were having in terms of purchasing and downloading transcripts. Toca madera. 

Many of you emailed saying that you’d like to purchase multiple transcripts for one price, so I’m going to start bundling transcripts in packs. There will still be individual transcripts for sale but only for select stories. As the story inventory grows (we’re currently at 43 audio cuentos and counting), it will be easier to navigate the online store if transcripts are sold in packs instead of individual titles.

In terms of the current state of the store, as of May 2, 2009, the Beginner section is fully operational and the Intermediate section has a bundled pack of transcripts with some individual transcripts for sale. The Advanced section of the transcript store is incomplete but I plan to have it restocked and operational over the next week. Will update this post when that is completed.

In the meantime, the podcast is back with fresh new episodes. Also, at least two, possibly three, Cody’s Cuentos listeners will be doing story readings for us in the coming weeks! ¡Qué emoción!

Created by bilingual moms Ana and Roxana, SpanglishBaby is building an online community where parents who are raising, or plan to raise, their children bilingually can come together to get advice and practical answers. Ana was born in Texas but raised in El Salvador while Roxana is originally from Peru. Today they both live in the United States in states (California and Colorado) where bilingualism is an important issue.

In “What in the world is a ‘mapache‘?, Roxana, a former TV journalist, writes a humorous first-person account about how her two-year-old daughter keeps her on her toes when it comes to speaking Spanish. In another entry, she writes about award-winning bilingual books for children.

Topics discussed on the blog will run the gamut from reviews and recommendations to food to cultural traditions to informative posts about bilingualism. The “Ask an Expert” feature invites readers to get their parenting questions answered by a team of bilingual experts. There’s also “La Tiendita,” where SpanglishBaby offers its bilingual picks for sale.

It’s an unbelievably terrible situation and Google is not providing any answers as to whether or not these people can be recovered. The Baby Website recently surveyed 3,000 British parents about fairy tales and the results, at least for a blog like mine, are not good.

While 66% of the survey respondents said that they believe that classic fairy tales have “stronger morality messages” than contemporary children’s stories, they don’t believe that the old tales by the Brothers Grimm, Charles Perrault, Hans Christian Andersen among others are appropriate for 21st-century kids. The classics, in the view of parents, are too scary, too sexist or too socially out-of-step and not politically correct.

Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs? Offensive to little people. The Gingerbread Man? Nope, too violent. The tasty snack with two legs suffers a gruesome, violent death when he gets eaten by a fox. Hansel and Gretel? An uncomfortable portrayal of parental neglect and abandonment. What about Cinderella? Scratch her off the list as well. She’s essentially a housebound slave who can only be freed by attracting the interest of a rich man.

Personally I believe that the classics are classics for a reason. They touch upon our universal fears and doubts, not to mention that they are memorable and entertaining. They also crank up your imagination. Remember what it was like as a kid picturing, in your mind’s eye, the image of a boy using a gigantic vine to climb up to the sky? The very first book I can remember reading on my own as a child was an illustrated anthology of fairy tales. I read and reread that book so many times that the pages eventually started to fall out.

Motherlode, the New York Times parenting blog, also discussed this survey and the reader reaction was immense. All viewpoints were reflected but the majority were in favor of not watering down the old-time fairy tales. Here is a sample of the reader comments:

I think fairy tales should be required reading. They are foundational archetypes for much of modern literature. If we erradicate all these unpleasent or uncomfortable ideas from literature it will all be bland nicey, nicey crap. No wonder kids are not reading. Great literature needs to have tension and even a bit of un PC challenge to society’s norms. Plus these fairy tales often have many cultural narratives. One thing my daughter and I have done with great pleasure is to read the many variations of Cinderella and compare how each culture depicts the conflict.

Years ago, I had a literature professor tell me that the reason that so many classic fairy tales featured an absent mother was because it was one of the few deep tragedies that a small child could immediately understand and respond to – and that in years (and centuries) past, many women died during their childbearing years, leaving many, many children to grow up without their mothers.

That said, I’m in no rush for my children to vicariously experience the loss of their mother, classic literature or not.

The loss of parents sets a child up for an adventurous, if sometimes frightening life. When these stories were written, many children lost their parents when they were quite young. Reading these stories to kids provide us with a window into a world that is gone forever. However, our world is not without its own “wolves”. Even if it was, children would still make up their own monsters. Do you know a child who doesn’t have at least one monster? My son, 8, made up monsters of his own when he was 2.

Mommy has created a new page for Cody’s Cuentos inside Facebook, a popular Internet web site where humans hang out. Supposedly no dogs are allowed, but we’re going to see about that! Anyway, this page in Facebook is a place where you guys, the listeners of Cody’s Cuentos, can meet one another and also get to talk with mommy and me. It’s also a place where you can ask questions, leave comments, feedback and suggestions. Also, if you want to leave me an occasional fan letter or a virtual dog biscuit, that would be cool too.

Speaking of fans….we need you to drop by and make it official and become a fan of the podcast. Why do you have to do that? Well, Mommy says that whenever we have some news to tell you, we can send you a message through Facebook. She doesn’t want me to spill the beans yet but there are a few special stories, something she calls  “a mini-series,” that she’s getting ready to podcast early next year. So if you’re one of my fans on Facebook, I’ll make sure you hear about this kind of stuff as soon as Mommy says it’s OK.

The goal of these Beginner-level stories is to help you improve your Spanish listening comprehension and to further your understanding of various aspects of Spanish grammar. These stories are not designed to teach you Spanish from scratch. As you can imagine, it would be impossible to read or listen to a story in a language in which you knew absolutely no words. So I’m operating from a belief that you already know some Spanish and are looking for an entertaining supplement.

The first story is entitled “Chema y Emma escriben una carta.” The story features vocabulary related to daily routines and Spanish reflexive verbs. An enhanced transcript of the story is available. The transcript includes:
•    The entire story in Spanish.
•    An English translation of the story.
•    Grammar and vocabulary notes. This is an explanation in English of some the key vocabulary or   grammar items presented in the story.
•    A practice exercise.

I recommend that you listen to the story first, without the transcript. See how much you understand just by listening. Then play the audio a second time while reading the transcript. That way you can see how much you understood the first time. Be sure to read the Grammar and Vocabulary Notes at the end of the transcript to get more insight into the structure of the story.

This new Beginner category is a bit of an experiment for me so I really need to hear from you guys as to what works, what doesn’t, etc. It’s actually more challenging to do the Beginner-level stories than the Intermediate and Advanced ones since the Beginner stories need to be specially adapted and more detailed explanations given.

Los pollitos dicen is the title of a popular lullaby sung in Latin America. It’s also the name of a company run by Cuban-American entreprenuer Carrie Ferguson Weir. Listen to the podcast I did with Carrie about growing up Cuban-American in Miami and how she came to develop a T-shirt line for babies.

Besides being a businesswoman and working mom, Carrie also writes an enjoyable blog about her life. It’s called Bilingual in the Boonies.
